It’s been an absolute treat to have the wonderful opportunity of working with the folks at Ovation Youth Dance Company over the past few weeks – while they were busy preparing for this years performance of “The Dance Illustrations of Beatrix Potter”. When you combine more than 60 talented young dancers ranging from 7 to 20 years of age, a beautiful choreography, a most innovative storyline, stunning costumes and sets, and the creative leadership of Leigh-Anne Gorrie and Nigel Hannah – amazing things can happen.
When Leigh-Anne approached me with the job assignment of covering their end to end photography and video needs (headshots, promotional images, promotional video and a DVD production of the stage performance itself) – I was only too happy to oblige. It’s not every day you have the opportunity of working with Flopsy, Mopsy, Jeremy Fisher and Mrs Tiggywinkle! I think the outdoor photoshoot we had in a nearby park rank as one of my favorite fun moments. We were there to reenact some of Beatrix Potters original old drawings in a natural setting. Walking casually through the park with a frog, a squirrel, a rabbit and a fox seemed wonderfully surreal – and the group certainly caused a few puzzled stares and a lot of smiles from the other park visitors.
While I was filming last nights performance at Roodepoort Theatre – it was obvious that the kids literally beamed in the spotlight – finally being able to showcase what they had all worked so hard to create. Needless to say, their performance drew well deserved standing ovations from an excited audience.
A DVD with the recorded performance and the photos will be available from Ovation Youth Dance Company – firstname.lastname@example.org or http://www.ovationydc.co.za
