About Happy Accidents in Photography

Often – equipment failure or simple miscalculation – can generate some really interesting stuff. I’ve noticed on several occasions that I get a rather cool, edgy, silhouette look when my key light somehow fails to fire (the key light is what’s normally considered the main source of light). Initially I was just annoyed by the failure of the flash – but the “ooh’s and ahh’s” of the people looking at the preview in the camera made me reconsider.

So when I had a photoshoot with the super amazing dancers at JOZI Youth Dance Company the other day – I tried to deliberately force my key light to skip every 2nd frame or so – in order to generate some images with this effect.

Here’s an example of an image with the key light – and one without:

In terms of preferences – it’s all subjective and depending on the usage. But I’m thinking that it might be something to explore a bit further. So here’s to happy accidents!

NB. JOZI Youth Dance Company performs at the Roodepoort Theatre, April 1-3. Make sure to book tickets for their stunning high performance show here
